According to a recent survey of fashion industry executives by Alvanon, a global fashion innovation company, the shortage of talents with specific professional skills in the garment retail and production industries has triggered a new round of "talent competition".
Alvanon, in collaboration with 13 apparel companies, surveyed 642 top executives, HR managers, industry practitioners and employees in the supply chain, 64% of whom worked in management or above. One third of them come from North America, one third from Asia-Pacific, one fourth from Central and South America, and the rest from Europe and other countries. Alvanon asked them about the skills gap, learning and talent development needs in the apparel industry, and produced the report "Survey of Professional Skills of Apparel Industry Practitioners 2018".
The report found that 62% of respondents said they were trying to fill the positions of skilled employees in the industry chain. Therefore, fashion retailers, brands, manufacturers and suppliers are facing the shortage of key professional skills.
Some companies are now hiring more than the battlefield, says Sarah McConnell Hays, purchasing manager for children's wear retailer Carter's: "We're fighting for talent."

In addition, the data further showed that 91% of respondents believed that training was crucial to the professional development of employees, while 88% said that it was also important to maintain job satisfaction.
According to the report, the top priority for enterprises now includes figuring out how to attract employees and provide more opportunities for professional development. Only 16% of respondents said that the company they worked for had recently conducted skills assessment among employees, which meant that companies did not fully understand what employees could offer and what skills they still lacked.
Janice Wang, CEO of Alvanon, said: "Human resources professionals don't really know how to evaluate skills because they don't know the technical skills. As a result, many companies require employees with certain skills to assess whether employees with lower positions have mastered such skills. But it's extra work, not to mention the awkward situation in the team.
